A Supervisor Helps a Worker Address His Depression and His Hazardous and Heavy Drinking After a Broken Relationship

Russ got suspended from high school when he was seventeen years old and eventually got a job at a local metal recycling plant. For the past six years he has gained a reputation as a hard-working and reliable person who seldom calls off work because of sickness.

Around six months ago he started dating a woman named Emma. They appeared to hit it off right away and looked as if they had a lot of good times together.

The Irresponsible Drinking Begins

When Russ met Emma, he rarely drank. This circumstance totally changed when Emma and Russ started dating on a fairly normal basis. In truth, everything was going great until Emma called Russ one night approximately 3:30 AM and said that she had to stop dating him and that she couldn’t explain the reason at that moment.

The next morning before he went to work, Russ went to her apartment and found out in an instant that Emma had already moved out. Russ took this exceedingly hard. In actual fact, he was taken aback because they seemed to be getting along so very well.

When Excessive Drinking Leads to Work Problems

So what did Russ do about Emma’s departure? Instead of working through his suffering and pain, he started getting inebriated almost every night. It didn’t take long for his coworkers or for his supervisor to notice that Russ was coming to work late at least twice per week and that he routinely called off sick. Moreover, some of his co-workers made an appointment with staff in Human Resources Department and mentioned that Russ constantly came to work with a strong smell of alcohol on his breath or on his clothes.

Russ’s supervisor heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Russ’s fellow employees. So one Tuesday afternoon he invited Russ into his office. He told Russ that he had recently noticed a profound change in his attendance, behavior, work performance, and in his sick time.

When a Boss Can Encourage an Employee to Get Help For His or Her Heavy and Abusive Drinking

Russ’s supervisor also mentioned that a number of his fellow employees reported him to Human Resources because he had been coming to work with a noticeable smell of alcohol. His supervisor then stated the following: “Russ, your fellow employees are not reporting you to HR to get you into any trouble or because they dislike you but instead because they care about you. And I care too. I don’t want to pry into your life outside of work, but it seems very clear that you are exhibiting some of the well known signs and symptoms of excessive drinking. Consequently, I want you to go and see someone in the employee’s assistance program to discuss your drinking behavior and your depression.”

“Russ, I’m no doctor or a psychologist, but I have seen many of my relatives and friends suffer through some really negative alcohol side effects. Furthermore, I have also seen the signs of alcoholism first-hand in my own family. When people experience problems with drinking, these problems not only affect the drinker, but they also make an impact on his or her relatives, neighbors, friends, co-workers, and family.”

Russ respected his boss quite a lot and as a result followed through with his suggestion the very next day when he called and scheduled an appointment with a psychologist in the employee’s assistance program.

Russ is Still Depressed But Feels Some Hope That He Will Get His Life Back on Track

Although Russ didn’t automatically feel any better or less depressed about the pain in his heart about Emma, he felt some reassurance knowing that his boss and his fellow employees cared about him and wanted what’s best for him. This gave Russ some emotional relief for the first time in more than a few weeks and he honestly felt some hope that he would get his life back on track.
